Lot no. 35
Roger Marcel LIMOUSE (1894-1990)* Scène marocaine Huile sur toile, signée en bas à droite, titrée au dos 75 x 108 cm - 291/2 x 421/2 in. Moroccan Scene Oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled on reverse Provenance : Galerie des Granges, Genève. Born in 1894 in Collo on the Algerian coast, Roger Limouse moved to Paris in 1919, following a brief period working for the government in Tunis, to commit himself to becoming a painter. The three years that he spent at the Académie Jullian in the studio of P.A. Laurens allowed him to meet and befriend Jules Cavaillès. During this time he was also introduced to Dunoyer de Segonzac and La Patellière however despite these encounters, the artist struggled to jump-start his career as a painter. In 1933 Limouse was awarded the Vikings Prize and set off immediately on a series of travels throughout Holland, Norway, Belgium and the Mediterranean countries of Italy, Spain and Morocco. It was during his voyage throughout the Iberian Peninsula that he discovered El Greco, an artist who would greatly inspire his work. These travels abroad, including a later voyage to Madagascar, enriched his bright, at times even violent, color palette. His style was characterized by his ability to lend to banal subjects, such as market scenes and still lifes, expression that was at the same time devoid of emotion. Roger Limouse married Jeanne Laillard, also a painter, and they shared their lives between Paris and Menton.
