ROMAN BRONZE APPLIQUÉ WITH GORGONEION.

A bronze appliqué cast as a frontal Gorgoneion, the oval face with arched brows, large almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and full lips, all framed by tightly radiating locks. Above the head runs a transverse ribbed tube, flanked by scrolling, leaf-like projections. The lower edge tapers into a small palmette with a pair of opposed leaf-shaped projections, and the reverse is hollow.
Size: 60mm x 45mm; Weight: 55g.
Provenance: From a British collection formed in the 1990s; previously acquired in Germany.
