ROMAN CRYSTAL ROCK WITH HOLOGRAM INTAGLIO
Ca. 100 BC - AD 100. An amazing crystal rock Hologram intaglio, which features a frontal bust of a nobleman with curly hair. Unlike a traditional intaglio which is carved in low relief, the figure here is carved on the back of the stone to create the 3D illusion. This token was most likely created for an important priest. Provenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the Swiss art market in the 1990s.
