ROMAN GLAZED POTTERY OIL LAMP WITH EROTIC SCENE
Ca. AD 100 - 200. A glazed pottery oil lamp crafted from orange clay. It features a circular flat body resting on a flat base. The lamp includes a rounded spout with a wick hole and the tondo presents a relief depicting an erotic scene, illustrating a man and a woman engaged in intercourse; the woman is squatting while the man lies beneath her. This intimate depiction is framed by ovolo decoration encircling the entire perimeter of the tondo. At the rear, there is a small looped handle. Size: 100mm x 70mm; Weight: 75g. Provenance: Property of a London gallery, acquired on the German art market; Ex. HK collection, Germany, before 1995. This piece is accompanied by German export license.
