ROMAN GOLD RING WITH HERACLES FIGHTING THE NEMEAN LION
Ca. AD 1 - 100.
An oval, translucent chalcedony intaglio depicting Heracles in combat with the Nemean lion. The hero is shown nude, striding left, and grapples the lion by its head and mane. The beast rears up, its forelegs raised, locked in the struggle. The intaglio is framed within a plain collet of a substantial hoop with a tapering profile.
