ROMAN HAEMATITE MAGICAL GEM WITH HARPOCRATES AND TRIADS OF ANIMALS IN HIGH KARAT GOLD FRAME
Ca. AD 1 - 200.
An oval haematite magical gem engraved with Harpocrates seated on a lotus flower emerging from a papyrus boat, depicted in profile facing left. He wears the side-lock and a solar disk, raising his right hand to his mouth and holding a flail in his left. A star and crescent appear beside his head. Encircling the figure are five triads of animals: scarabs, goats, serpents, crocodiles, and falcons. The reverse bears a Greek inscription arranged in six rows of repeated letters: ΑΑΑ / ΕΕΕ / ΗΗΗ / ΙΙΙ / ΥΥΥ / WWW. Set in a plain gold mount with a ribbed suspension loop above.
