ROMAN HIGH KARAT GOLD DROP-SHAPED PENDANT SET WITH A CARNELIAN HEAD OF A THEATRE ACTOR.
Ca. AD 1 - 200 A gold pendant set with an oval carnelian mask of a theatre actor with furrowed brows, drilled circular eyes, a prominent nose, and a gaping mouth. The gem sits in a raised oval bezel on a drop-shaped plate bordered with applied gold spheres, the back plain with a transverse tubular suspension ring. Size: 34mm x 21mm; Weight: 6.5g. Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with S.T. collection, Switzerland, 1980s-2000s.
