ROMAN HIGH KARAT GOLD INTAGLIO RING DEPICTING MERCURY
Ca. AD 1 - 200.
A garnet intaglio depicting the left-facing bust of the god Mercury. His hair is rendered in short curls across the forehead and crown, with a few locks falling behind the neck. A caduceus appears behind the shoulder, and he wears a garment fastened at the shoulder. The intaglio is set within a thick, oval bezel with a raised rim, mounted on a gold hoop tapering slightly at the back.
