ROMAN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING CHIMERA Ca. AD 200 - 400. A carnelian intaglio engraved with a chimera, showing a lion’s body in profile with a goat protome arching from its back and a curling serpent forming the tail, all set above a sharply incised groundline. The intaglio is cut in an octagonal form and is set within a bezel on a solid gold hoop of thick, angular construction.
