ROMAN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING CUPID RIDING GRYLLOS AND DOLPHIN.

AD 200 - 300 A gold ring with a hoop formed of a continuous sequence of rounded beads, joined at the shoulders by larger globular terminals to a broad oval bezel plate edged with a fine beaded border and housing a carnelian intaglio engraved with a complex gryllos composed of a horse’s forepart, a Silenus mask and a ram’s head, with a small Cupid and a dolphin behind. Size: D:18.54mm / US: 8 1/2 / UK: Q 1/2; Weight: 8.3g. Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly in a German private collection before 2000.
