Lot no. 94 - A
ROMAN MARBLE STATUE OF EPHEBUS Ca. AD 150. A finely executed marble torso representing the fragmentary figure of a youthful male, most likely an ephebe. It is preserved from the neck to mid-thigh, with both arms and the lower legs missing. The sculpture, carved in fine-grained white marble, displays a warm, subtly variegated surface and retains light patination in several recessed areas, including the underarms, indicating age and long-term exposure to environmental agents. The figure is rendered in contrapposto, with the weight subtly shifted to the left leg, the right leg set slightly forward and relaxed. This is particularly visible in the tilt of the hips and the gentle curvature of the lower abdomen, conveying a sense of latent movement. The musculature is idealised, with smooth planes and understated transitions rather than anatomical exaggeration. The thorax is broad and gently modelled, with the pectorals moderately defined but not hypertrophic. The delineation of the costal arch and oblique lines suggests an attentive observation of youthful anatomy, characteristic of Roman classicising tendencies. For similar see: C.
