ROMAN MOULD-BLOWN GLASS OINOCHOE IN THE FORM OF AN EMPEROR’S HEAD. Ca. AD 130 - 250 A mould-blown oinochoe in translucent light blue glass. The globular body is formed as the head of a male figure, likely representing the Emperor Nero, with detailed facial features including almond-shaped eyes, a prominent straight nose, full lips, and a defined chin. The hair is rendered in a mass of tight curls, covering the crown and sides of the head. The neck of the vessel rises cylindrically from the top of the head and flares into a trefoil mouth with a sharply defined, inward-folded rim. A single strap handle is attached from the shoulder to the rim. Size: 240mm x 125mm; Weight: 405g. Provenance: Private collection of a London doctor; formerly in the collection of a Mayfair collector, Y.G.; ex UK private collection, 1990s. Accompanied by an authentication letter from Richard Rooney, widely regarded as the leading expert and restorer of ancient glass in the UK.
