ROMAN RED GARNET INTAGLIO DEPICTING BUCOLIC SCENE IN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING Ca. AD 1 - 100. A red garnet intaglio engraved with a bucolic scene showing a seated figure in a relaxed pose, draped in a mantle and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, possibly a traveller or herdsman, leaning against a tree. The gem is set in a possibly later gold ring with a high-walled bezel flanked by a pair of opposing volutes on each shoulder. The hoop is flat in section and narrows evenly towards the base.
