ROMAN SEVERAN MARBLE HEAD OF YOUTH Ca. AD 200 - 300. A finely carved white marble head of a youth with an expressive countenance. While it may not be imperial, it is a powerful portrait of an important individual, given its scale and fine delineation, likely created during the era of Emperor Alexander Severus. The piece has heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes with drilled pupils, feathery brows with incised individual hairs, an aquiline nose (with losses, as is often the case with Roman busts), full lips with a defined philtrum and moustache and naturalistic ears. The handsome face is crowned with a close-cropped, forward-combed, wavy coiffure. Size: 95mm x 80mm; Weight: 605g.
