ROMAN TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH SOL INVICTUS
Ca. AD 100 - 300.
A mould made terracotta lamp of Loeschcke type VIII with carinated body and stylised volutes flanking the nozzle. The discus is decorated with a bust of Sol Invictus facing frontally, draped and wearing a radiate crown. The shoulder bears a pattern of impressed ovules with axe-head motifs on each side. The base bears concentric rings enclosing an impressed maker’s mark consisting of the letters Ο and Ν.
