Lot no. 290
RONDELET (Guillaume). L'Histoire entiere des poissons. Lyon, Macé Bonhome, 1558. 2 parts in one volume in-folio, grained basane, ornate spine, mottled edges (pastiche binding). First French edition of the most important ichthyological treatise published to date, describing 244 aquatic species of the Mediterranean.
This French translation, probably by Laurent Joubert, was much more highly prized than the original Latin edition, published by Macé Bonhome in 1554-1555, both editions being "equally remarkable for the fine execution of the woodcuts", according to Brunet.
Superb woodcut illustration, including more than 420 figures in the text of aquatic animals, sea and freshwater fish, crustaceans, molluscs, insects, batrachians and zoophytes, the composition of which Baudrier attributes to the Lyon artist Georges Reverdy, as well as a portrait of the author attributed to the famous Pierre Eskrich, known as Pierre Vase, repeated in the second part.
3 ff. of table missing at the end of the second part (sign. aa2-aa4); worm spots and light halos not serious in the margins of a few leaves.
Nissen, ZBI, n°3475 - Norman, II, n°1848 - Brunet, IV, 1373 - Baudrier, X, 259 - Brun, 294.
