Lot no. 58
RONSARD (Pierre de). Les Œuvres, written in six volumes. The first, containing his Amours, divided into two parts. Paris, Gabriel Buon, 1567. In-4, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, large spandrels of azure interlacing, field decorated with a scattering of small gilt fleurons, large gilt coat of arms in small irons in the centre, flanked by four laurel wreaths (containing the words: t. de lvsse / nullo ævo / dissociabilis / i. potiere), richly decorated spine, decorated edges, gilt and chased edges (contemporary binding). Second collective edition, extremely rare and "infinitely more beautiful and complete than the first", according to Seymour De Ricci, due in particular to its noble format: the first edition, in 1560, was in-16. The edition consisted of six volumes, each containing a separate work. It was expanded by fourteen new plays (including one in Les Amours). This first volume, presented on its own, contains all of Ronsard's Amours, one of the most famous collections of poetry by the founder of the Pléiade, originally published in Paris in 1552. It was in this work that Ronsard established the rules of the sonnet and brought together some of his most beautiful love poems. The volume is divided into two books with separate paginations, containing the Amours de Cassandre, with commentary by Marc-Antoine Muret, and the Second livre des amours (or Amours de Marie), with commentary by Rémy Belleau. It features woodcuts of portraits of Muret and Ronsard by Jean Cousin, foliate bands and Gabriel Buon's mark on the titles of both books. The copy is complete with the final blank leaf. A very precious copy set in a luxurious Parisian binding with the arms of Tristan de Lusse, an exceedingly rare and highly desirable condition. The large azure irons on the spandrels are identical to those on Antoine Du Verdier's Prosopographie bearing the arms of the Duc d'Aumont in the collections of Baron Pichon (1897, I, no. 1465) and Maurice Burrus (2016, no. 18). Both bindings come from the same Paris workshop. The coat of arms has been surrounded by four medallions containing the names t. de lusse and i. potiere and the motto "nullo ævo dissociabilis" (lit. at no time separable, i.e. forever inseparable). This contemporary oath of fidelity to love is particularly touching on a copy of Ronsard's Amours. The volume shows no stamps; it was most likely acquired and bound alone at the time. Manuscript bookplate of Christophle Dugourd (1636-1681), bourgeois of Riom, repeated several times in the volume and dated 1652-1653. His father, Pierre Dugourd, was a councillor in the Auvergne seneschaussée and presidial seat of Riom. From the library of Viscount Victor de Bellaigue de Bughas (1828-1894) at Château de Varvasse, Chanonat, with bookplate. Corners worn, small gnawing at the top of the second cover, a few scattered stains and yellowed leaves. Tchemerzine, V, 476 - De Ricci, n°46 - Ronsard, la trompette et la lyre, n°263 - Barbier-Mueller, II, n°46 - Brunet, IV, 1374 and Suppl. I, 502 - Mortimer, n°463 - Rothschild, n°667 - De Backer, n°397.
