Lot no. 33 Doktor Josiah Conder's collection of Japanese Art from Consul General Grut. Depicted in the catalogue page 19. No 65 in Conders own collection.Dr. Josiah Conder, 1852?1920. Was a British architect who worked as a foreign adviser to the government of Japan in the Meiji period. Conder developed a keen interest in Japanese arts. In 1915, the Tokyo Imperial University awarded Conder an honorary doctorate. His daughter Helen was born in 1880, she went to a famous girl?s school in Tokyo, and then studied in Brussels for four years. On her way back from Brussels, she met WL Grut who came from an old prestigious family in Denmark. They fell in love and married in 1906. When Conder died in 1920 Helen was in Bangkok, with her husband. She rushed to Japan for the funeral.
