A painter and sculptor, Rosa Bonheur made a name for herself with her highly realistic and sensitive depictions of animals, painting them with remarkable precision. When her father died in 1849, she took over as head of the free drawing school for young girls (a position she held until 1860). She travelled to the Auvergne and then the Pyrenees in the summer of 1850, thanks to Madame Micas.
