Lot no. 1513
Rosa, Salvator Four men in dispute. Ca. 1665. Coloured etching on laid paper. 14.5 x 9 cm (19.5 x 15 cm). Monogrammed in the plate. Mounted in spots on support and framed behind glass. Nagler 49 - The etchings by the Italian artist Salvator Rosa are characterised by a great artistic freedom and an expressive style that stands out from the academic rigour of his time. Unlike many of his Baroque contemporaries, who favoured a clear, balanced composition, Rosa often created wild, impetuous scenes in which the figures and landscape elements are depicted with expressive energy. Our sheet also shows the dispute between several men, like a snapshot in a dynamic composition. - Sheet slightly browned due to age. Otherwise very good with finely nuanced, burnished impression.
