Duchesne], 1762. 4 volumes in-12, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this major work in which Rousseau sets out the principles of a natural education. The first edition, published by the Parisian bookseller Duchesne under the address of a Dutch colleague, was printed in two formats: one in-12, addressed to Amsterdam, the other reprinted in-8, addressed to The Hague. Jo-Ann McEachern has established that the in-12 edition was printed first, but that it was sold and distributed after the in-8. The edition is decorated with 5 hors texte figures by Charles Eisen engraved by de Longueil, Pasquier and Le Grand in the first printing. A very good copy in contemporary binding. Corners worn, one headband frayed, scattered foxing; in volume I, frontispiece partly disbound and small ink stain on title; in volume III, corner of one leaf missing (p. 251).
