Lot no. 295
ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). J. J. Rousseau, citoyen de Genève, à Mr d'Alembert, sur son article Genève dans le VIIme volume de l'Encyclopédie, et particulièrement sur le projet d'établir un théâtre de comédie en cette ville. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1758. In-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, marbled edges (Binding of the period). First edition.
D'Alembert's quarrel "with Jean-Jacques Rousseau over his article Genève, in which he deplored the Calvinists' proscription against theatres, offered the singular spectacle of a mathematician taking sides for the freedom of the arts against a literary scholar crowned at the theatre and who spoke out against spectacles" (Larousse).
A very good copy, complete with the publisher's back catalogue. Discrete restorations to the binding.
Dufour, n°77 - Tchemerzine, V, 535.
