Manuscript of xliv pp. dated 1765. 3 works in one volume in-8, tortoiseshell calf, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated with a herringbone pattern, marbled edges (Binding of the period). First edition of Rousseau's last work published during his lifetime, in response to Lettres écrites de la campagne by Jean-Robert Tronchin, in which the public prosecutor of Geneva justified the Genevan authorities' condemnation of Emile and the Social Contract. "For the first time, the philosopher intervened directly in Geneva's affairs. [His letters] contain, over and above constitutional matters, developments on the spirit of the Reformation, as well as a defence of the Social Contract. (Société J.-J. Rousseau). The copy is complete with the four boxes mentioned by Dufour, but it does not contain the final errata page, which is often missing, nor the blank page at the end of the first part. The extract from the publisher's catalogue is bound at the end of the volume. An interesting copy in an attractive contemporary binding, bound with Tronchin's Lettres écrites de la campagne, in a rare 117 pp. edition not cited by Rivoire. The volume also includes a contemporary manuscript copy of Propositions à examiner pour apaiser les divisions de Genève, by Voltaire, accompanied by his letter to M. Jabineau de la Voute and the consultation drafted by the parliamentarian in response to Voltaire's proposals. Marginal worm damage at the beginning of the volume; last leaves foxed and pitted.
