Lot no. 126
ROUTIER DE GRANDVAL (Count Charles). An ascent of Mont Blanc in 1857. Chambéry, Imprimerie Nationale, 1857. In-12, bound in half-chagrin with corners, covers preserved (modern binding). First edition. Offprint from the Gazette de Savoie of 19 and 21 July 1857. Very rare brochure describing the ascent of Mont Blanc by Count Charles Routier de Granval on 29 June 1857, with guide Michel-Ambroise Payot. From the library of Henri Ferrand, with his bookplate pasted on the cover. Excellent condition. Little is known about the author of this climb. The Routier de Granval family were planters who settled in Réunion. He could have been Charles Augustin Achille de Granval, born in Saint-Denis in 1828 and died in Sainte-Marie in 1864, or his cousin Toussaint-Charles Routier de Granval, born in Saint-Denis in 1832, married in 1863 and killed in action on 19 January 1871 with the rank of second lieutenant.
