On 15 February 1806, Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, entered the city of Naples. He became King of Naples and the Two Sicilies by imperial decree on 30 March 1806. His reign lasted until 6 June 1808, when, having been appointed King of Spain and India, he was replaced on the throne of Naples by his brother-in-law Joachim Murat.
