KINGDOM OF ITALY Chamberlain's key of Napoleon, King of Italy Gilt bronze ring, in several screw-mounted parts, chased with oak and laurel leaves, decorated in the centre with a crowned eagle bearing the crown of the Lombards and resting on a shield with the numeral "N". The round stem is half decorated with a string of leaves and pearls on an olive base. Plain collar and ball. Attached to a green moire bow with gold trimmings. Cut hook. Length: 19 cm B.E. First Empire period (1805-1814). Provenance : Former Napoleonic collection of the Prince's Palace of Monaco (1st sale, lot 120) An Emperor Napoleon's I chamberlain's key Commentary: It should be noted that the viceroy, Eugène de Beauharnais, also had chamberlains who wore keys bearing his cipher.
