Lot no. 255
United Kingdom, Regency-style silver coffee pot made in London between 1815 and 1820. Made by William Linsley or William Lewis. British hallmarks eroded but generally legible. This coffee pot was created in gratitude to Mrs. and Mr. Dirix by Lieutenant-Colonel Llewellyn who commanded the 28th Regiment of Foot at the Battle of Waterloo. Llewellyn, who was a Major at the time of the battle, was seriously wounded and evacuated to Brussels, where he was cared for and welcomed into the Dirix family home, as revealed in the London Gazette of 3 July 1815. Llelwellyn was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and received an annual pension of £300. Llewellyn is depicted in William Salter's painting of the Waterloo banquet and his portrait by the same artist is on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The text on the belly reads: "To Monsieur and Madame DIRIX, a small token of gratitude, from Lieutenant Colonel Llewellyn for their never to be forgotten kindness to bun while suffering froma severe wound received in the BATTLE OF WATERLOO", while the other side bears the Llewellyn family coat of arms. Silver, weight: 778 grams.
