PROVENANCE :
Bourgey sale, Paris, 14 December 1922, lot n°99.
Note:
This coin belongs to the fourth group of Merovingian coins attributed to Chalon-sur-Saône. The mintage is vigorous and well-centred, on a slightly short flank.
Following the victory at Autun in 534, the Burgundian territories were annexed to the Frankish kingdoms, ruled by the Merovingians. Although the initial capital was Orléans, the independent monarch soon preferred Chalons sur Saône. The gold coinage of Chalon-sur-Saône was certainly the most abundant of the Merovingian period. This territory gradually disappeared with the advent of the Carolingians and was definitively dissolved with the Treaty of Verdun in 843.
