He studied with Ludwig von Herterich at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After the First World War he went on study trips to Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, Italy and Germany. Hafner was primarily known as a landscape painter, with his preferred motifs being winter mountain worlds, fog and foehn atmospheres in an impressionistic technique. In addition to his painting, Hafner worked as a set designer for the Vienna Burgtheater, the Schönbrunn Palace Theater and the Academy Theater. He was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus from 1930, showed his works at over 40 exhibitions and received several awards, including the City of Vienna Prize for Painting in 1948 and the title of professor in 1946. Hafner died in Vienna in 1951 after a long illness.
