After completing his training, he devoted himself primarily to portraits and realistic figuration, with his style maintaining a clear, sober visual language with precise lines and muted colours. Lehnert showed his works at numerous exhibitions in Austria and Germany and was appreciated for his realistic portraits and genre works. He lived and worked mainly in Innsbruck, where, despite his relatively short life, he had a lasting influence on the regional art scene. Lehnert died in Innsbruck in 1932. His work is characterised by a calm, clear composition and a sensitive representation of his motifs.
