Anton von Ruthner (Vienna 1819 - Salzburg 1897) was an Austrian mountaineer who played a considerable role in the conquest of the Eastern Alps during the golden age of mountaineering; in particular, he is credited with the first ascents of the Gross Venediger in the Hohe Tauern (1841), the Schwarzenstein in the Zillertal (1858) and the Ruderhofspitze in the Stubai Alps (1864). These writings helped to raise the profile of mountaineering in the Eastern Alps.
