Herzberg and others, 1662-1815. ca. 130 thread-stitched vols. (a few loose). Various sizes. Sizes from approx. 20 x 16.5 to 33 x 19.5 cm. Mostly untrimmed laid paper, some with watermark and seal. Inlaid in binding cover (approx. 42 x 29 cm). Pigskin leather on 6 bands with marbled endpapers. With marbled endpapers, chisel lines, scroll and plate stamps (front showing Justitia, back showing another virtue, binding database P002078) (rubbed, somewhat stained and soiled). The former Landes- und Fürstenschule Grimma (today Gymnasium St. Augustin and Saxony's only regular grammar school with boarding school) was founded in 1550 by Duke Moritz of Saxony and served for almost four centuries as a pre-university educational institution for aspiring civil servants and theologians in Electoral Saxony and Central Germany. - Contains letters to the council and mayor of Herzberg as well as letters from the council to the elector, the school rectors and others - With original autographs of the rectors Georg Ermel (1659-1745), Heinrich Gotthelf Noah Hofmann (1734-1822), Johann Tobias Krebs (1718-1782), Johann Heinrich Mücke (1735-1799), Heinrich August Schuhmacher (1683-1760), Friedrich Wilhelm Sturz (1762-1832) as well as letters from fathers concerning a school place for their sons. These include Christian Erdmann Agner (Master of Philosophy, pastor), Johannes Budaeus (pastor), Adolph Wilhelm and Christian Gottlieb Fleck, Johann Gottlob Grässe (1769-1827, schoolman), Johann Christian Günther, Johann Christian Meyer (schoolmaster), Johann Traugott Noth (1759-1832, Ottendorf, pastor), Christian Gottfried Jehnichen (deacon in Freiberg, for his son Johann Gottfried), Gerhard Christoph Klopfleisch (1753-1806, school inspector), Johann Chr. David Posewitz (Dahme), Ch. Caspar Pötsch (preacher, for his son Johann Caspar Siegmund), Heinrich Samuel (Leipzig), Johann Christian Reichel (for his son Christian Ludwig), Carl Christoph Wendt (school administrator), etc. Mostly folding marks. - Mostly fold marks, browned due to paper, margins partly dusty and with small tears, last few pages creased, otherwise in good overall condition.
