Sadeler II, Aegidius Allegorical portrait of Bartholomeus Spranger and his wife Christina Muller. 1600. copper engraving. 43 x 30 cm. Signed and with Latin inscription in the plate. Partially mounted under passepartout and framed under glass. Hollstein Dutch 332-1(2). - With watermark cf. WZIS DE0465-TonkSchl23_251. - First state. - The inscription at the lower edge of the image describes that the engraving was based on a drawing by Bartholomäus Spranger, which he made in the course of his mourning for his deceased wife Christina Muller. Aegidius Sadeler made the engraving as a gesture of friendship towards Spranger. Spranger is sitting on the left-hand side of the picture, looking towards the viewer. His wife is depicted in a painting on the right-hand side of the picture and is also looking towards the viewer. The two figures are surrounded by personifications of the liberal arts and Death, among others. - Aegidius Sadeler II (ca. 1570-1629) was the son of Aegidius Sadeler I and probably the most famous engraver from the Sadeler family. - Bartholomäus Spranger (1546-1611) was a Flemish painter. - Trimmed to the platemark. With small losses and tears in the margins, backed with paper on verso. Centrefold torn and also backed on verso. Foxing in margins. Strong, nuanced impression.
