SAINT CATHERINE - The Embden Collection
Gothic, France, probably Burgundy, ca. 1500.
Marble, carved in the round. The saint stands in contrapposto with her gaze lowered. She wears a delicate crown, a belted, close-fitting robe with filigree folds, and a cloak. Her hair falls in long, wavy strands. At her right foot are the wheel and what is presumably the head of Emperor Maxentius wearing a turban (both fragmentarily preserved).
H 49 cm.
Signs of weathering. Minor repairs, supplements, and filling.
