[SAINT-DOMINGUE]. NOLIVOS, Pierre Gédéon de (1714-1794), slave-owning planter, former governor of Guadeloupe (from 1765 to 1768), then of Saint-Domingue from (1769 to 1772). He ended his life in Béarn.
Very important archive relating to the administration of his Cul-de-Sac estate in Saint-Domingue, mainly addressed to Nolivos by M. de Vezins.
Edifying testimony to slavery in Saint-Domingue.
Approximately 80 documents: memoirs, letters and miscellaneous items. Some are annotated by Nolivos or drafts of his replies. Cul-de-Sac, Port au Prince, Pau, Paris, Sauveterre de Béarn, etc, 1787-1792. Approximately 425 pages in various formats, mostly folio and in-4. Paperback (with yellow, red, blue or cream silk laces) or leaves.
Of the tables, memoranda, correspondence, sugar invoices and administration of stocks, debts and accounts of the estate, shipment of goods (sugar) by sea, etc., we will only give a brief overview, given the very large amount of information:
-" Journal des travaux exécutés sur l'habitation de M. Le comte de Nolivos scise au Cul de Sac, du 1er octobre 1787". 8 pp. in-4: "1st Monday. Begin to prepare the two remaining divisions of room n°32 to plant in food and 15 negroes occupied to serve massous. Tuesday. Digging for weeds in the said divisions. [Sunday, all the negroes busy in their gardens. Monday, ditto and searched the sewage pits in the room [...]". [...] ". This is followed by long lists of expenses and suppliers, etc.
-Letter from Vezins to Nolivos. Cul de Sac, 1st November 1787. 13 pp. in-4. Mail classified by articles. Article 7: "Death of a negro. I have lost Léandre, whom I announced to you in my last letter of 1 September, article 7. His leg was broken on the 25th of the said month. He died of tetanus on the 14th. He did not lack the help of humanity. I can flatter myself that I took all possible care of him, but to no avail. The wound was too close to the joint of the foot [...]". The state of the negroes. All your negroes in general are doing well. The new negroes are setting an example to the old ones by their accuracy. They are good subjects [...]". Vezins announces the need for a trip to France and will be replaced by his brother. Paillaison du sucre, stewardship of various localities, etc. Edifying.
-" Account rendered by Henri René de Vezins of his administration of the sugar house located at the Spanish acul [...] and the coffee house called Chateauroux belonging to M. le comte de Nolivos". This is followed by a table, printed and completed by hand, entitled "Births of Negroes from - to -". Account of births and deaths of slaves, then births and deaths of animals [...]". Edifying.
-Diary, January 1791. "1 Saturday, party for the negroes. 2 Sunday, all the negroes in their garden. 3 Weeding and clearing of ditches - 13 negroes in Chateauroux for three weeks [...]".
