SAINT JEAN DE CAPISTRAN An appliqué figure in repoussé silver, the Saint is shown standing in Franciscan garb over his armour, wearing a helmet, holding a sword in his right hand and an open book in his left. Early foreign work. Charançon hallmark Probably part of an altarpiece or reliquary shrine. Height: 23.5 cm - Width: 8 cm - Depth: 4 cm On a wooden base Gross weight: 350 g Saint John of Capistran (1386--456) was an Italian Franciscan monk, tireless preacher and renowned jurist. A member of the Order of Friars Minor, he travelled throughout Europe preaching the Catholic faith. In 1456, despite his advanced age, he spiritually led the Christian troops in the defence of Belgrade against the Ottomans, for which he is depicted wearing military regalia. He was canonised in 1690 and celebrated on 23 October. IMPORTANT From lot 275 onwards, the lots can only be viewed at our storage facility in Gennevilliers.
