Salomon van Ruysdael zählte in den 1620er Jahren neben Jan van Goyen und einigen anderen zu einer Gruppe junger Haarlemer Künstler, die die niederländische Landschaftsmalerei revolutionierten. Die Kunst sollte die wechselhaften Phänomene der Natur und die Atmosphäre einer Landschaft wiedergeben, Elemente wie das Wasser, den Wind, das Licht mit den Mitteln der Malerei festhalten. In seinen Flusslandschaften fand Ruysdael bereits in den frühen 1630er Jahren einen Bildtypus, der diesem neuen Landschaftsideal entsprach. Dieses Gemälde, wohl Mitte der 40er Jahre entstanden, folgt dem ein Jahrzehnt zuvor mustergültig gewordenen Kompositionsschema. Das Wasser nimmt die gesamte Breite des Bildes ein, so dass der Betrachter meint, sich auf dem Fluss zu befinden. Durch die diagonale Anordnung der Bäume wird eine Tiefenräumlichkeit erzeugt. Die Häusergruppe mit den Wäscherinnen auf dem Boot bildet das Zentrum der Komposition und verlebendigt die Szenerie mittels der Figurenstaffage. Die zentralen Bildelemente sind jedoch nicht die Figuren, es sind vielmehr der Himmel und der Fluss, die dichten Wolken, die den Himmel verlebendigen und das Wasser, in dem sich das Ufer spiegelt. Salomon van Ruysdael and Jan van Goyen belonged to the group of young Haarlem artists who were to revolutionise Netherlandish landscape painting in the 1620s. They aimed to depict the changing effects of light, wind and water, phenomena of nature and atmospheres of the landscape in painting. Ruysdael invented a form of river landscape exemplary of this new kind of painting in the early 1630s. The present work was probably painted in the 1640s and follows the compositional scheme developed in the preceding decade. A large portion of the work is dominated by water, giving the viewer the feeling of floating on the painted river. The diagonally placed trees create depth, and the group of houses with washer women in boats forms the centre of the composition, simultaneously enlivening it with figures. However, the main focus is clearly placed on the river and sky, with thick clouds gathering in the heavens and the river bank reflecting in the water.
