SALVATORE CANDIDO Naples, 1814 - 1869 Fishermen's boats in the Bay of Naples Signed Sal Candido bottom right Oil on canvas, 22X36 cm A refined painter, of whom little is known about his biography, our artist produces works characterised by a taste for detail and a landscape sensibility typical of the Posillipo school. His painting shows clear references to the French tradition of Claude-Joseph Vernet, evident in the atmospheric rendering and the scenographic treatment of the view. The painting in question shows an extraordinary wealth of detail, almost calligraphic, which testifies to the artist's desire to create an accurate scenic representation. The scene probably appears to have been conceived 'en plein air' and subsequently reworked at the easel in the studio. The view of Naples emerges luminous, with bright, almost enamelled colours that give the whole an almost tactile quality. The animation of the scene is provided by the presence of fishermen's boats, introducing a sense of everyday life. In addition to its aesthetic value, the work constitutes a valuable historical and cultural document, offering a glimpse of Naples at the time through the lens of a painter attentive to detail and atmospheric rendering. The balance between descriptive fidelity and stylistic refinement makes this work a significant example of Neapolitan romantic painting.
