SAMAIN Albert (1858-1900). Au Jardin de l'Infante. Paris, Mercure de France, 1893; large square in-12, navy blue morocco, mosaic flower branches on the upper cover, ribbed spine, navy blue morocco inner frame with gilt fillets, dotted lines and roses, red silk lining and endpapers brocaded with tiger roses, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, green cover printed in red (S. David). First edition. A young Samain, who worked as a clerk in Lille, soon moved to Paris, where he frequented the Hirsutes, the Hydropathes and the Chat Noir before digging his own furrow. This first collection was an immediate and lasting success. ☞ One of 10 copies on Japon impérial, after 3 Chine, 3 Whatman, before 20 Hollande and 299 on tinted vellum making up the ordinary edition. Some very superficial rubbing.
