Divided into Three Parts.
The firth part, Shewing the Nature and Properties of the Winds and Mouffons in the Navigation from England to the East-Indies, and all over the Oriental Océan, and thereby how to fhap a Courfe from one Port to another, according to the time of Year in thofe Seas.
The second part, Containing neceffary Inftructions for Sailinf between England and the East-Indies in the Spring and Fall.
The third part, Defcribing the Sea-Coafts, Capes, Headlands, Streights, Sounding, Sands, Shoals, Rocks, Dangers.
The Iflands, Bays, Road, Harbours and Ports, from Cape Bona Espérance, all over the Oriental Océan, being very much Correct and Augmented with feveral Additions : Not heretofore Publifh'd. Collected for the general Benefit of our own Country-men, by John Thornthon, Hydrographer.

Le père de Samuel, John THORNTON (1641-1708), était hydrographe de la East India Compagny.
Il a publié The Third Book Descritbing the Sea Coasts… in the Oriental Navigation pour faire suite à l'English Pilot de John Seller.
La première édition, en 1703, intègre 35 cartes. Compte tenu de l'importance pratique de cet atlas (qui précède d'un demi-siècle ceux de d'Après de Mannevillette et de Van Keulens), il sera réédité par son fils en 1711 (avec ajout d'une carte de Chine).
À la mort de Samuel en 1715, les planches seront acquises par la maison d'édition Mount & Page qui rééditera le Pilot et publiera le Forth Book
