SAND (George)
Nohant, 18 December 1858...
Autograph letter signed to Ernest Cabasson.
1 p. in-8 (21 x 13.5 cm), on embossed paper with his cipher.
Interesting unpublished letter to the lawyer Ernest Cabasson on the lawsuit brought against François-Lazare Breuillard following his offensive speech against the writer.
"I approve of you and thank you for appealing against the judgment. I don't know where the case will be brought and I don't yet know to whom you should hand over the exhibits. If the case is still to be heard in Auxerre, I would ask you to keep them. If not, Monsieur Arrault will tell you what to do with them. I have also instructed Mr Arrault to discharge my obligations to you; but the debt of gratitude for your good care and your zeal I will keep with me so that I never forget it.
On 7 August 1858, Breuillard, then head of a school, made an offensive speech about Sand at his school's prize-giving ceremony. He described her as "old and exhausted by all the debaucheries of mind and body". Sand sued and won, the court ruling that the attack was against her privacy.
