Lot no. 204
SAND Maurice. Masques et bouffons. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1860; 2 vols. large in-8 of viii-356-3 pp. and [4]-384 pp. in contemporary bindings of green half-chagrin, spines decorated with gilt caissons, combed edges. First edition of this monumental study of Italian comedy. First edition of the 50 figures in red engraved by Manceau after drawings by the author. He was Delacroix's only pupil and possessed real artistic talent. Preface by his mother, George Sand.
A precious copy given by Maurice Sand to his father, with a signed autograph letter: "Hommage à mon père, Maurice Dudevant Sand". As the rather cold wording suggests, relations between Maurice Sand and his father were very distant. Some light foxing and marginal rings at the end of the second volume.
