SANSON (Guillaume). [L'Atlas Nouveau]. Paris, Hubert Jaillot, [1681]. Large folio (62 x 48 cm), brown calf, double gilt fillet, ornate spine, roulette on the edges, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this sumptuous collection of maps, almost all by Guillaume Sanson (1633-1703), the king's geographer like his father Nicolas Sanson dit d'Abbeville. The Atlas Nouveau was published by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in 1681, but the maps date from the previous decade, between 1672 and 1676. The present copy contains 23 very fine double-page copper-engraved maps in large format (approximately 62 x 90 cm), with borders coloured in the period. All are by Guillaume Sanson. Composition (the numbering refers to the collation given by Mireille Pastoureau): [1] Mappe-monde géo-hydrographique ou description générale du globe terrestre et aquatique en deux plans-hémisphères. 1674. Hole with small lack in the ornamental cartouche. - 3] Asia distinguished in its principal parts. 1674. - 8] Scandinavia and the vicinity of the kingdoms of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. 1675. - 15] The Pyrenees Mountains, where the passages from France to Spain are noted. 1675. - 14] Alsace divided into its main parts. 1674. - 17] The German Empire. 1674. - 18] The Netherlands divided into seventeen provinces... 1672. Minor scratches on title cartouche. - 19] The Provinces of the Catholic Low Countries. 1672. Ink stains on title block. - 20] United Provinces of the Netherlands. 1673. Fine tears in middle fold. - 21] Northern part of the County of Holland. 1674. Assembled to : Southern part of the County of Holland. 1674. In cartons, map of the kingdoms of Algiers and Fez. Copy incomplete of 23 maps, title-frontispiece and table leaf. On a flyleaf, a contemporary handwritten table lists 36 maps (13 of which were subsequently removed from the volume). Binding worn and badly worn. Discreet scratches or smudges on the coats of arms adorning the title cartouches of some maps, minor dampstaining and minor marginal tears.
