LEAD SARCOPHAGUS
Phoenician art, circa 1st-2nd century AD
Fragmentary sarcophagus of rectangular shape, decorated in relief on each long side with six panels delimited by Corinthian columns, decorated in the centre with a mask of Medusa or a sphinx, surrounded by dolphins or laurel leaves. The main register is framed at the top and bottom by friezes of laurel leaves and ivy. One of the narrow sides is decorated with the façade of a temple with Corinthian columns housing two canthars, while the other features a Medusa mask from which radiates a cross with eight twisted arms terminating in ivy leaves.
Missing parts and accidents.
