SASAK, Lombok Island, Indonesia. Betel grinder handle made from deer antler in the image of a seated figure, elbow on knee and hand on shoulder. Lombok betel grinders are traditional tools used to prepare betel quid, often decorated with intricate designs and human or animal figures. Their often explicit depictions of characters with prominent sexual features are deeply linked to local culture and beliefs. Length: 10 cm. Provenance: Collected in situ in 1976 by Jacques Cortecero.
