Lot no. 72
SASAK, Lombok Island, Indonesia.
Betel grinder handle made from deer antler with an image of a figure holding its penis in its hand.
Betel grinders from Lombok are traditional tools used to prepare betel quid, often decorated with intricate designs and human or animal figures. Their often explicit depictions of characters with prominent sexual features are deeply linked to local culture and beliefs. These sculptures, often meticulous and of remarkable finesse, can symbolise fertility, vitality and connection with nature, essential themes in the animist and spiritual traditions of the Sasaks, the majority people of Lombok.
They can also symbolise the owner's social or cultural status.
