Lot no. 234
SATYRE MÉNIPPÉE de la vertu du Catholicon d'Espagne, et de la tenue des Estatz de Paris. S.l. [Tours], s.n. [Jamet Mettayer], 1593 [1594]. In-8, woollen calf, gilt Greco-gilded border, smooth spine decorated, mottled edges (Early 19th century binding). Rare edition of the most famous political pamphlet of the 16th century. This is one of four authentic editions in 255 pp. printed in 1594 but backdated by a year. This is the edition that Tchemerzine considers to be the second, except that p. 111 is correctly numbered. On the other hand, p. 230 is numbered 130. "La Satyre Ménippée is one of those texts whose literary quality and historical and political content have ensured both its extraordinary contemporary success and its passage to posterity, to the pantheon of literature" (J. P. Barbier-Mueller). The text is attributed to the collaboration of Jean Le Roy, Jacques Gillot, Florent Chrestien, Nicolas Rapin, Pierre Pithou and Jean Passerat. Light marginal spotting. Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, 390.
