Set of twelve heavy place plates from the dinner service of Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg (1857-1920) and his wife Duchess Elisabeth of Saxony (1854-1908) Silver. Round, in classic chippendale form. Slightly recessed, smooth centre, merging into a broad rim. Flower-shaped, curved rim with multiple mouldings. On the rim an engraved alliance coat of arms under a ducal crown with a depiction of the crowned bull's head of Mecklenburg with a flattened tongue and the Saxon lozenges. Marked 800 and partly with jeweller's mark "Th. Müller" for court jeweller Theodor Müller, Weimar. Total weight approx. 6770 g. D. 26 cm. The colonial politician Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg-Schwerin married Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Duchess of Saxony, in 1886. The couple had Wiligrad Palace in Mecklenburg built as their residence, creating an important meeting place for nobility, statesmen and artists. The present plates are presumably from the castle's collection.
