Lot no. 203
[SAUERWEID (Alexandre) or Jean-Rodolphe GAUTIER]. Uniforms of the Guard of His Majesty the King of Westphalia. S.l.n.d. [1810]. Small folio, red morocco, gilt border of foliage and fleurons, coat of arms in the centre, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this extremely rare suite of 19 aquatint-engraved plates of uniforms of the Westphalian Royal Guard, preceded by a typographical title. None of the plates in this fine suite is signed, but they are attributed by Lipperheide, Colas and the BnF catalogue to the Russian military draughtsman Alexander Ivanovich Sauerwied (1783-1844). However, a handwritten note on the title of the copy indicates that these uniforms were "drawn by Colonel Gautier, head of the topographical cabinet", a military draughtsman who moved from the Dépôt de la Guerre to the service of the King of Westphalia and whom Henri Delarue identifies as the Genevan painter Jean-Rodolphe Gautier (1764-c. 1820). A copy bearing the arms of Jérôme Bonaparte (1784-1860), King of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813 under the name Jérôme-Napoléon I. From the library of the Château de Balleroy, with bookplate. Endpapers renewed, minor rubbing to binding, a few scattered stains, not serious. Lipperheide, n°2202e - Colas, n°2641 (attr. to Sauerweid) and n°2930 (attr. to Gautier) - Henri Delarue, "En marge d'une estampe: qui est le colonel Gautier?", Genava, 1944, XXII, pp. 211-217.
