Paris, Gasse, 1628; 5 parts in one vol. in-4 (207 x 154 mm), spotted calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons (contemporary binding). FIRST EDITION. One of the most famous orientalists of his time and one of the most skilful diplomats, Savary de Brèves was ambassador to Constantinople from 1591 to 1605. He won the trust of the sultan and it is to him that we owe the famous treaty of alliance and trade between France and the Ottoman Empire (1604).
This voyage, written by his secretary Jacques du Castel, marked his return to France. Leaving Constantinople in 1605, he travelled along the Barbary coasts, paid extensive visits to Palestine, Greece, Egypt and finally North Africa, where he succeeded, not without difficulty, in negotiating the release of Christian prisoners. It is followed by the Treaty of 1604 between Henry the Great and Sultan Amat, Emperor of the Turks (34 pp.) and three speeches by Savary, one of which describes the Asseurez means of ruining the Turk.
A fine copy in contemporary binding (lacking the lower headpiece; cracks at the bottom of the hinges; various small accidents). Underlining and a few notes by a contemporary reader.
